Subject: viola, viola, viola.

I feel like it’s time for me to work on something new now that I’ve recovered from the surgery. I still haven’t mastered Bruch’s Romanze to my satisfaction, but I really want to work on something new and difficult so that it’ll motivate me to improve. I need to work on speed (*sigh* Schradieck No.1), vibrato (1st and 4th finger), not locking my wrist when bowing, the finer points of spiccato, intonation (since it’s been a while since I’ve played, uggggh), and musicality…as always.

I want a “moody” piece. Something that will require me to dig into the strings and force my bow to fly all over the place. Something with 42 notes in a single slur or with 32nd notes up and down the fingerboard. Something crazy. Something powerful. Something that will allow me to play out my frustration.

Here are some pieces I’m considering:

  • Schubert Arpegionne
  • Glinka Sonata in D minor Mvt 1
  • Rebecca Clark sonata
  • Hindemith Der Schwanendreher

I’m leaning towards Clark or Glinka…I should start reading more about them in order to play it as the composer intended. I tend to get very creative when it comes to music interpretation, which is not always good. I wish I could get a copy of the score so that I would know what I’m getting myself into. Maybe there’s a copy or an excerpt of these pieces online.
